I don't understand why anyone would mod the above article flamebait. The fact is that this was a tremendously destructive storm, because of all the moisture that it carried. I'm right there with people who want facts to be reported accurately, but the degree of preparation that went on before this storm was entirely appropriate. Should New York City have kept running the subway lines? The tunnels flooded! Should those people in Groton, CT, who boarded up their windows not have bothered? Some of their neighbors' houses were washed away. What about the damage on the Jersey Shore, and in North Carolina? Hype?
In my town alone, with a population of about 14k, there were 30 swift water rescues during the flooding. Houses were carried downriver. Propane tanks, hissing gas, were carried downriver. A young woman was swept away downriver, and drowned, two towns west of here.
What is amazing about this storm is that despite how serious it was, and despite all the damage that was done, so few lives were lost. Many towns in Vermont flooded, and some can only be reached by class 3 roads that are barely passable because the main road and the alternate have washed out, and the road that _is_ passable has two-foot waves in it.
We were shocked by the ferocity of the flooding. Yesterday morning I foolishly thought that the danger had passed, and this was a flash in the pan. I had no idea what that giant bank of orange on the radar over the Green Mountains meant. I'm really glad someone did, and that people got warnings in time, and weren't in the path of the flood waters when they came roaring down Whetstone Brook. I'm really glad that low-lying trailer parks were successfully evacuated, and that we are not reading about the tragic loss of life that could have occurred, but instead about people wondering when they can go back to assess the damage.
So if there was some scientific inaccuracy in the exact name that was given to the type of storm this was, I guess that's of some academic interest, but if this storm had gotten a different name, and that had resulted in less preparation, that would have really sucked. Some of my neighbors would be dead now.
I think this is the point that the parent was trying to convey. It's not flamebait. If there's a problem to correct, let's make sure that correcting it doesn't result in less hype the next time a storm like this comes through.

LONDON ? European stocks were hurt Tuesday by a report showing economic sentiment in the eurozone was souring due to uncertainties about the future of the global economic recovery and the region's festering debt crisis.
The European Union's economic sentiment index fell by a greater-than-expected 4.7 points to 98.3 ? the sixth consecutive decline, bringing the indicator below its long-term average of 100.
Germany, the eurozone's largest economy, saw the biggest drop. That is particularly worrying for traders because Germany had been the main motor of growth over the past year, helping Europe's economy grow despite the market turmoil spawned by the debt crisis.
"August's weak EC business and consumer survey adds to the evidence that the eurozone economy is now stagnating at best," said Jennifer McKeown, senior economist at Capital Economics.
After earlier trading higher, Germany's DAX closed down 0.5 percent at 5,643.92 while France's CAC-40 were up 0.2 percent at 3,159.74. Britain's FTSE 100 jumped 2.7 percent to 5,268.66, catching up on global gains made Monday, when it was closed for a holiday.
Wall Street, however, recovered from early losses to trade higher despite a survey showing a slump in consumer confidence in the U.S.
Although the data first weighed on Wall Street, investors took the opportunity to buy into what they considered cheap stocks. As a result, the Dow was up 0.3 percent at 11,575.77 while the S&P 500 gained 0.3 percent to 1,213.95.
Adding to uncertainty in Europe, a global accounting body criticized some European banking groups for not writing down their shaky Greek bond holdings enough.
The International Accounting Standards Board said some firms only wrote down the value of their Greek bonds according to a restructuring suggested by the Greek government, which would see their value drop by about 21 percent.
However, if firms tried to sell those bonds on the open market now, they would get much less than that, IASB Chairman Hans Hoogervorst said in a letter to the European Union's market regulator, the European Securities and Markets Authority.
Earlier in Asia, markets rode strong momentum from the previous day to close higher. U.S. economic figures on Monday had shown a strong increase in consumer spending and traders were encouraged by comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
One sign of possible help on the horizon was the Fed's decision to extend its upcoming policy meeting to two days instead of one. That raised the possibility of action, at least in the eyes of traders, to jolt the economy.
Another reason for the upbeat mood: investors were anticipating an announcement soon by President Barack Obama on a new jobs initiative.
"I think the focus is on President Obama's speech, which is related to measures that will revive the economy," said Kwong Man Bun, chief operating officer at KGI Securities in Hong Kong. "All this provides some of sort positive expectations for investors."
The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo added 1.2 percent to 8,953.90 as investors seized on positive U.S. consumer spending figures and overlooked a rise in Japan's unemployment rate.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.7 percent to 20,204.17 and South Korea's Kospi was 0.8 percent higher at 1,843.82. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.1 percent to 4,269.20.
Mainland Chinese shares lost ground, however, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.4 percent to 2,566.60. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 1 percent to 1,148.29.
Looking ahead, investors will keep an eye on U.S. economic indicators that could show slowing growth. Later Tuesday, the Consumer Confidence Index for August will be released. Then on Friday, the Labor Department will release U.S. employment data for August.
In currencies, the euro dropped to $1.4436 from $1.4505 late Monday in New York. The dollar slipped to 76.73 yen from 76.95 yen.
Benchmark oil for October delivery was up $1.61 to $88.88 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.90 to end at $87.27 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.
In London, Brent crude for October delivery was up $2.08 to $113.96 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Chrome has implemented a built-in print dialog that, by default, gives you a preview of your print job in a new tab and handles all of your printing needs without going through your operating system's default print dialog. It's a nice feature when it works, but in practice, the preview crashes?a lot?and when it does, the Print button is disabled. Here's how to work around Chrome's crashy print dialog so you can still get your print on when necessary.
Click the Advanced or Print using link: If you're using the beta or stable channel of Chrome, currently your only recourse is to go through Chrome's standard print dialog, let the print preview crash, and then click the Advanced link at the bottom of the lefthand sidebar (that link text changes to Print using system dialog in the dev channel). Clicking Advanced just opens your operating systems default print dialog.
Press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on OS X): Currently available in the most recent version of Chrome's dev channel (which means it'll likely be in Chrome's beta and stable releases eventually), this shortcut skips Chrome's print dialog and opens your system's standard print dialog.
As you can see, it's pretty simple if you know where to look. I've been having a lot of trouble with it lately, and I've heard complaints from others, so it seemed like a workaround others might be interested in. Hopefully the Chrome team will get this fixed up in time, because when it works, it really is a convenient feature.

If you?ve ever wondered what sports would be great for kids as young as 5 years old, this article will not only answer this question, but also give you some food for thought on youth sports overall. Most parents agree kids should be exposed to sports, but which sports and how early have been debated to exhaustion. So let?s take a look at the logical choice for best sport for a 5-year-old kid.
Before we discuss which sport is best for a 5-year-old, you need to understand the physiologically a 5 year olds body is not truly ready to compete in competitive sports at a high level. Both physically and mentally they?re bodies are far too immature to handle too much intensity.
Does this mean they shouldn?t participate in organized youth sports at such an early age? Of course not, but it does mean that as a parent or guardian of a young athlete you are responsible for making certain the environment you place them in is focused on skill development, teamwork, and having fun. The win at all cost will come soon enough; there is no need to rush into it.
Next you?ll need to understand the difference between athletic sports and technical sports. Obviously all sports require some athletic ability, but certain sports such as baseball, softball, and golf require a level of technical skills that may be too much to handle for 5 year olds. However if a parent or close relative is willing to put in extra work to help a young player develop skills it can work out ok, but it probably won?t be much fun for the young player.
So which sports are the best for a 5-year-old? Soccer would be the #1 choice for the following reasons:
? Only one part of the body needs to come into contact with the ball (goalies and throw-ins excluded) to be successful.
? There is very little isolation (again goalie?s excluded) which means a mistake isn?t magnified as much as say, striking out or missing a fly ball in baseball and softball.
? There is plenty of time and room to place one?s body in position to make a play on the ball.
? The rules can be easily adjusted to help young players have early success.
? Most of the adults watching can?t play either and most are unsure about the correct way to play the sports and therefore are less likely to yell instructions from the sidelines.
? Kids wear protective gear even though the objective is not to harm one another.
? It involves both attacking and defending so it gives kids a chance to be place in truly competitive situations.
? There is always a teammate nearby attempting to provide help and support, so when things do go wrong it?s usually a group effort.
? You get to run around in the grass on a sunny afternoon chasing a ball, what could be better than that for a 5-year-old.
There you have it, the perfect sport for a 5-year-old is soccer?or is it?

Our Idiot Brother was a light and enjoyable movie. Ned is dumbed down a lot, which is explained by his philosophy of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. You can't help but laugh as he goes from sister to sister and unintentionally reveals things about themselves and their family that they didn't know was happening themselves. The movie never really takes off though, and the ending was a little silly. It's a nice indie film to see!

My Junior year is completely messed up. The most important year and my grades were terrible:

I am pretty sure the AP classes are weighted already as these are the grades on my transcript.
My overall GPA is a 3.1 and my ACT is a 28. I just need to know, with these numbers, what type of colleges will accept me? I know it depends on which school I apply too but I don't know. I'm just worried. Because these are the grades I am getting from doing my best and putting in all my effort. Could it be that my best isn't good enough? What can I do to try to make my grades and such get better? I am taking the upcoming September ACT for the fifth time. I am trying to get at least a 30 if possible. It doesn't help that I'm a terrible test taker either? ugh. I wish I was smarter?:/

Apple the company is the most perfect corporate extension of its leader?s personality that has ever been created. Both the man and the company are visionary, driven, bold, brave, inventive, smart and supremely confident. Both entities are also sometime accused of being megalomaniacal, paranoid, mercurial, difficult and occasionally vindictive.
There is no doubt that Apple?s current products and pipeline of upcoming products is strong enough and deep enough to maintain the company?s influence and profitability for years to come, and I don?t expect to see any immediate changes in its business policies. But Apple without Jobs is bound to become less like an autocracy and more like a corporation, which means that the company will become more bound to the will of investors and the public than to the unyielding vision of its leader. Ultimately, that may cause problems for Apple?s products and its core business, but it is such a well-run company that I expect the first effects of Jobs? departure will for Apple to shed some of his, and by extension, the company?s most polarizing qualities. Why? Because without Jobs, some of those things just won?t be necessary, and without Jobs, neither the business community nor the public at large will stand for it. Let?s take a look at some of the ways that Apple could be-?and may soon be?a better company.
The truth is, as Apple has evolved an ecosystem that requires working with outside developers to make the most of its products, it must be more open about upcoming products. And to be honest, it?s not even clear that Apple?s secrecy gives them any tangible business advantage. For instance, the entire tech industry knew for years that Apple was working on a tablet computer, and even after it was officially launched, it took competitors a year and a half to produce a comparable competing device, and by then Apple was already onto version two.
The company is notoriously unpredictable with its developers, rejecting apps from the iOS App store with only vague guidance on how to change them for resubmission. Apple also routinely rejects app developers for duplicating functionality present in the operating system of the company?s devices, then punishes other developers who extend the capabilities of those devices by folding the functionality of their apps into OS updates. The iOS 5 update stole ideas from such influential apps as GroupMe, Instapaper, Boxcar, Remember the Milk and Wi-Fi Sync. While I doubt that Apple will lower its standards for app quality now that Jobs is gone, this isn?t just about quality. It?s also about allowing developers to innovate in ways that benefit consumers. Apple might be a bit less abrasive, and a bit more welcoming of outsiders? good ideas, under the stewardship of new CEO Tim Cook.
The most egregious example was Apple?s war with the tech blog Gizmodo over a leak of the iPhone 4, when editors at Giz got a hold of a prototype before launch and reported vigorously on it. The result was a surge of interest in the phone, which went on to become a blockbuster. Rather than basking in all of the free attention and publicity, Apple turned to law enforcement to go after Giz editors.?This is a publication that has a history of glowing endorsements and fanboy love of Apple?s products?but to this day, it has been blacklisted by Apple PR and barred from Apple events. This may seem like a simple squabble between trouble-making tech bloggers and a secretive megacorporation, but this sort of thing indirectly impacts consumers. When a company doles out information only to the most cooperative press and stonewalls anyone who irritates them, then the customer is ultimately starved of the honest, critical assessments of products that are essential to buying decisions.
And Jobs? lack of interest in charity has translated directly to corporate behavior at Apple. According to a 2008 article in Fortune, one of Steve Jobs? first acts upon returning to Apple in 1997 was to cancel all of Apple?s philanthropic programs as a cost-saving measure. Yet as of the writing of the Fortune piece, none of those programs had resumed. More recently, philanthropic organizations have criticized Apple for the company?s refusal to let charities solicit donations through iOS devices. That said, retirement had a way of bringing the best out of Bill Gates, who morphed from one of the most ruthless businessmen in history to one of the most generous. Maybe Steve and Apple will follow suit.
Whatever you think of Apple?s products, the cult of "specialness" surrounding the company that served it quite well when it was a boutique manufacturer is positively cloying now that it is a mass-market technology company. Employees clap for you when you walk out with an iPhone on launch day. The company?s ads describe its own products with words like "magical" and "revolutionary." While these descriptors may be true, it sounds a lot different when you?re saying it about yourself. This type of behavior goes all the way up to the top. At the launch of the iPad, when Jobs was asked if Apple does any customer research, he responded that the company doesn?t do customer research. "It?s not the customer?s job to figure out what they want," he said.
That type of instinctive ability to know your customers better then they know themselves is, of course, part of the secret of Apple?s success, but it also means that things that customers routinely ask for ("How about a few more USB ports on my MacBook, please?" "C?mon, no expandable storage on any iOS devices?") are routinely ignored. The departure of Steve Jobs is also presumably the departure of Jobsian self-assuredness. I don?t see Apple instantly setting up a Customer Research department, but I would be delighted if it became a bit more responsive to customer concerns?and maybe drop the attitude.
Even if Apple does adopt all of these fixes, maintains their commitment to quality, still comes up with stunning innovations and manages to become even more dreamy without Steve, I?m still going to miss having him run the company. He is a difficult genius and an erratic character, but there?s a reason all of us in the tech press felt privileged to be at his keynote speeches and product launches. When you watched him on the stage, you were witnessing a man in charge of a technology company who was truly in love with the creations he produced?a dreamer who wanted cool stuff so badly that he literally willed it into being. Now the rest of us will have to hope that enough of Jobs? DNA is left in the company to keep the dream alive.

I bought a ?new? car a few months ago.? It isn?t new, but it?s new to me.? It?s a nice car, a 2007 model?in excellent shape, low mileage, immaculate interior, and it is a luxury model with all the bells and whistles.?? It was a great deal for us.? It is primarily for my wife to drive and she loves it.? It actually looks brand new?until you get really close, that is.
I remember washing and cleaning the car for the first time.? I?m pretty detailed when it comes to that kind of thing.? I clean all the parts of the vehicle?rocker panels, wind dam, door jams, etc.? I go over the interior well, cleaning the carpeting, cleaning and conditioning the leather, etc.? Well?the thing about doing that is you begin to see all the little flaws in the vehicle.? Suddenly, the car that was pristine is no longer so in your mind.? For, as is true with every vehicle that is driven daily for any length of time, there will be little dings, scratches or chips in the paint.? There may be a small stain on the carpeting that you can?t quite get to come out.? You get the idea.? A closer look reveals the blemishes that may n0t have been apparent from a distance.
The same is true of our relationships.? Think about all the relationships you have in your life?spouse, children, friends, co-workers, relatives, etc.? When we establish a new friendship, for instance, we may see little of the flaws in that person?s life.? The things that have drawn you together are generally positive and those tend, at first, to overshadow any negative things that are there?and believe me, they?re always there.
What do you do with those blemishes?? In your marriage, when you got to the point that it wasn?t the honeymoon period any more, how did you deal with the reality that this person whom you love and have committed your life to, isn?t as perfect as you may have thought?
In your friendships, as you?ve drawn closer, you may have begun to see the reality of those things that are negatives.? Have those issues hampered the progress of your friendship?? Have you been able to get past them, or have you met a roadblock?? After all, every person has flaws, obviously some more than others.? How we deal with them in relationship is crucial to, not only the progress of that relationship, but also, how we develop and mature as well.
In a paragraph of very practical instruction, Peter, in his first letter to the church, gives us a clue into how we must deal with this.? He writes:
1 Peter 4:8
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
He simply tells us, deep love will cover those blemishes.? This must be the application we take away from his instruction.? We know that we, as human beings, have no ability to ?cover? sins?that is, to grant forgiveness for salvation or spiritual connection with God.? Drawing from the passage which Peter is quoting, we get a clue about the intent of this truth.
Proverbs 17:9
Disregarding another person?s faults preserves love; telling about them separates close friends.
Further instruction from the Proverbs tells us?
Proverbs 10:12
Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses.
So?we have two simple principles that will be invaluable in maintaining and growing our relationships?any relationships.? One of the principles is explicit the other is implicit.? Both are core to the truth of the gospel.
This is reason to celebrate!? This is motivation to love Him back.? This is the reason we can express love to others.? Implied in Peter?s command is the reality that a multitude of sins (those of the entire world) have been covered by the sacrifice of Jesus.? Do I have flaws and blemishes that offend God?? Yes?no, I have wicked, sinful actions and attitudes that have gone against His sacred Law.? In spite of that, He has loved me and provided a means of forgiveness.? He has chosen to forgive and separate me from those sins as far as the east is from the west and chosen not to remember them against me any more.? Awesome!? I am reconciled and in a growing relationship with my Father as a result of the practical application of His love toward me.
Love is a verb, as Toby Mac said, and it is active when I am treating others with grace.? Oh, I can look closely at the faults and blemishes of others?when we get close, we?re going to see them.? But, if I choose to overlook those things which I can, and lovingly and graciously address those which I should, my relationship will grow and progress, and I?ll mature as a follower of Christ?for I will be growing more like Him.
If you are involved in a small group setting where you are attempting to connect with others in a growing faith and growing community, think of the importance of this dynamic.? As we share life in a small group, we will very quickly begin to see one another?s blemishes and faults.? If we allow them to, we will find these things separating us.? In fact, however, they are opportunities to connect.? Loving another person means we are going to be willing to overlook those surface issues that can easily become the focus.? Instead, we?re going to allow love to drive us deeper, below that surface to see the real person and love the true individual.? When we come up against a serious issue that is detrimental to that individual?s well being, we?ll then be relating to them in a way that permits us to lovingly and graciously address that issue.? They?ll be ready to listen because of where our love has taken us.? This is obviously a God thing?not something that happens in our own ability.? There is really no better place to practice this thin in a small group.
So?the next time your taking a close look at your friend?s life?remember, love overlooks the road wear?it looks deep into the beauty of the person inside.? Real relationships are not a test drive?they?re the long haul.
