More heavy rain hits NKorea, flooding buildings

ANJU, North Korea (AP) ? More heavy rain pounded North Korea on Monday, submerging buildings, cutting off power, flooding rice paddies and forcing people and their livestock to climb onto rooftops for safety.

The rain follows downpours earlier this month that killed nearly 90 people and left more than 60,000 homeless, officials said. The floods come on the heels of a severe drought, fueling renewed food worries about a country that already struggles to feed its people.

Two-thirds of North Korea's 24 million people face chronic food shortages, a U.N. report said last month, while asking donors for $198 million in humanitarian aid for the country. South Korean analyst Kwon Tae-jin said the recent flooding, coming so soon after the dry spell, is likely to worsen the North's food problems.

On Sunday and Monday, rain hit the capital Pyongyang and other regions, with western coastal areas reporting heavy damage.

In Anju city in South Phyongan province, officials reported 1,000 houses and buildings were destroyed and 2,300 hectares (5,680 acres) of farmland were completely covered.

The Chongchon River in Anju city flooded on Monday, cutting communication lines and submerging rice paddies and other fields, said Kim Kwang Dok, vice chairman of the Anju City People's Committee, who told The Associated Press that the disaster is the worst in the city's history.

Boats made their way through the muddy water that covered the city's streets Monday. Many residents sat on their homes' roofs and walls, watching the rising water. A young man wearing only underwear stood on a building's roof with two pigs; four women sat on another rooftop with two dogs.

Helicopters flew to various areas to rescue flood victims, state media reported. Casualties from the latest rains were not immediately reported.

If it rains again before the water drains, the damage will be greater, Kim said.

Earlier this year, North Korea mobilized soldiers and workers to pour buckets of water on parched fields, irrigate farms and repair wells as what officials described as the worst dry spell in a century gripped parts of both North and South Korea.

North Korea does not produce enough food to feed its people, and relies on limited purchases of food as well as outside donations to make up the shortfall. It also suffered a famine in the mid- and late-1990s, the FAO and World Food Program said in a special report late last year.

National Cancer Institute Researcher Admits Contraception ...

English: Institute: National Cancer Institute ...

English: Institute: National Cancer Institute (NCI) Category: Directors Equipment Laboratories Scientists Description: Dr. John E. Niederhuber, the Director of the National Cancer Institute (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) ??The National Cancer Institute has done everything possible to deny a link exists between abortion and breast cancer.?Now, the main NCI acivist who got the agency to deny the abortion-breast cancer link has co-authored a study admitting the abortion-breast cancer link is true, calling it a ?known risk factor.?

Scientists and educators about the abortion-breast cancer link point to a new study that clearly shows a link between abortion and breast cancer.?The study, conducted by Jessica Dolle, appears in the April, 2009 issue of the prestigious cancer epidemiology journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.?The Dolle study ? one of the first to receive recognition for highlighting the abortion-breast cancer link ? concerns the link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer.

The study examined women for triple-negative breast cancer, a subset of breast cancer cases with a particularly aggressive and treatment-resistant cancer type.?The data yielded a strong association between TNBC and oral contraceptives and found a 320% risk increase for breast cancer over those who never used contraception.

?When it comes to the abortion link, the study did not produce any new results but it cited the Daling studies from 1994 and 1996 that showed between a 20 and 50 percent increased breast cancer risk for women having abortions compare to those who carried their pregnancies to term.

As Dr. Joel Brind, a prominent breast cancer researcher, says?the kicker is that one of the coauthors of this new study is Louise A. Brinton of the NCI.?While the NCI maintains no abortion-breast cancer link exists, Brinton is the co-author of a study that is cited in this new research.??Importantly, Brinton was the chief organizer for the 2003 NCI (U.S. National Cancer Institute) ?workshop? on ?early reproductive events and breast cancer,? a panel which reported that the lack of an ABC link had been ?established,?? Brind says. ?(Coverup anyone?KH)

?In other words, since 2003, the NCI has firmly maintained the position that there is no ABC link; that the studies which had reported such a link were deemed unreliable. However, two of these prior studies were the very studies by the Daling group (of which one Brinton also was a co-author),? he continues.??Now, in 2009, Brinton is on record reiterating findings of the ABC link and reporting them as ?consistent? with earlier studies that found induced abortion to be a risk factor,? Brind says.

Karen Malec, president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, a women?s group that educates about the abortion link, calls the admission a scandal. ??Although the study was published nine months ago, the NCI, the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and other cancer fundraising businesses have made no efforts to reduce breast cancer rates by issuing nationwide warnings to women,? she added.

She says Dolle?s team reported in Table 1 a statistically significant 40% risk increase for women who have had abortions and listed it among ?known and suspected risk factors.???Obviously, more women will die of breast cancer if the NCI fails in its duty to warn about the risks of OCs and abortion and if government funds are used to pay for both as a part of any healthcare bill,? Malec said.

I received my B.S. degree in 2004, studying primarily in the areas of Psychology, with minors in Religion and English. I received my Masters Degree in 2009 in Psychological Counseling with an emphasis in Christian Counseling. My ministry is geared toward victims of sexual and domestic violence, including victims of childhood sexual abuse, whether currently or in the past. Since I have personally experienced the healing hand of God in overcoming many of the life issues that Christians may face, I feel qualified and compelled to discuss them in a truthful and open manner, as God?s word tells us that ?We shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free.? God has brought me through such diverse tribulations as sexual, physical, and mental abuse, being a victim of a drunk driving accident, spousal pornography addiction, adultery, divorce, remarriage, a very brief, though unjust, incarceration, and having experienced multiple miscarriages and various other trials. I have been asked to leave two Southern Baptist Churches, due to my being a female, ordained as a minister, and fired from a SBC sponsored Christian School (mostly white) for speaking out against racial prejudice in the Family of God. Through God?s merciful forgiveness of my own sins and inadequacies and God?s grace given to me to forgive those who have been a stumbling block to me, I have overcome many of these adversities. God?s word tells us that ?All things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to the purposes of God." Since I have this hope, I believe that God has blessed me with the ability to confront and relate these issues to the Christian community, and that I have been called to the homeland mission field of North America. I hope to be able to use my personal experiences as a ministry of God?s grace and in the comforting of the people of God with the truth of God's mercy. I claim II Corinthians 1: 3 & 4 as my calling, which states: ?Blessed be God, the Origin of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Origin of mercies, and the God of comfort; who comforts us in all our troubles, that we may be able to comfort those who are in trouble, by the comfort we ourselves have been given by God.? As I have received the gift of God?s healing, I hope to be able to bring the peace beyond understanding to others with the message of God?s mercy and grace. My love for the Sovereign Lord of my life, Jesus Christ, along with my passion for writing has drawn me to explore these commonly experienced crisis issues from the perspective of my own experience in the hope that I may bring an empathetic and compassionate insight to God?s people. I am now a published author and have several books in publication, including my autobiography, "A Little Redneck Theology." The views expressed in my writings are strictly my own insights, acquired from personal experience and diligent study of the related topics and God?s word concerning them. Though I am an ordained minister, my views should not be considered authoritative. I believe that the Christian community?s ultimate authority is the guidance of the human heart by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Tuesday's Three Burning Legal Questions - Legal Blog Watch

Tuesday's Three Burning Legal Questions

Here are today's?three burning legal questions, along with the answers provided by the blogosphere.

1) Question:?The police are at my house because my husband claims I kicked him. I only did that because he was trying to grab my neck. The police asked me to give them a demonstration of what my husband did -- should I go along with that request and show them?

Answer: Sure, but don't get too animated in your demonstration or you'll be arrested for?battery on a law enforcement officer. (The Daytona Beach News-Journal,?Port Orange police charge woman after she re-enacts domestic abuse claim on cop)

2) Question:?We are half-finished building our new dream house and we just discovered we built it 3.5 inches too close to a neighboring property. No big deal, right?

Answer: Sorry, but you are going to need to either pay about?$25,000 to correct the error or buy more property to render it moot. (UPI, 3.5 inch home error costs $24,850 to repair)

3) Question: My spouse is in the D.C. jail and he is depressed. When do I get to visit him and give him a big hug?

Answer:?Never -- all inmate visits at the D.C. jail are now done?electronically via?a camera at the new Video Visitation Center. (District of DeBonis,?DeMorning Links: eVisits only)

Family Fun Mom: Back To School 2012: 10 Last Minute Things To ...

I had Grand Plans for our summer this year.

No vacations, but lots of fun things to do around here.

Remember my Summer Bucket List?

Ummm, let's just say a few of those things didn't happen.

(And by a few, I mean several...or most.)

BUT, there's still a little time left, and we can make the most of it!

Here are 10 Things you should definitely try to fit in BEFORE the madness of school begins!

10. Go To The Drive In!? I LOVED the drive in when I was a kid, but my kids have yet to experience this fun summertime tradition.? We.? Will.? Make. It.? Happen.

9.? Have a Yes Day!? My friend does this with her kids and they love it.? It's a day where the answer is always yes, (within reason).? Ice Cream for Breakfast?? Yes!? Spending The Day on The Wii?? Yes!? Staying up late?? Yes!

8.? Nigh time Fun Run!? This is a fun little tradition I heard about last year.? After you put the kids to bed, wait about 30 minutes, and then run in and tell them it's "fun run" time.? You all load into the car, pj's and all, and drive to do something fun like ice cream, or a park, or maybe even the drive-in :)

7.? Camp Out In the Backyard!? This was something I did every year as a kid, and it was so much fun!? Let the kids invite a few friends over and make your backyard your own little camping ground!

6.? PJ Day!? This is actually one of my favorite days, but the kids enjoy it too.? Spend the ENTIRE day in pj's doing fun stuff around the house.? Snacks, movies, board games, whatever!

5.? Water Park Day!? Soon, all the water parks will be closed.? So take advantage of them now before homework and fall sports take over.? If visiting a Water Park isn't in the budget, you can visit a spray ground, or even make your own water park at home!? Check out this great site for ideas!

4.? Hiking!? A family hiking day has become a tradition of ours, and we love it.? It's a great time for family to reconnect and talk about nature, what's going on in their lives and get some great exercise!

3.? Garage Sales!? I have said it a million times, but kids love going to garage sales!? Give them a budget and set out to let them find their own little treasures.? It teaches them about money, value and it's a great time for the whole family.

2.? A Park Tour!? Our city has about 4 million public parks (okay, I might be exaggerating a little, but it's a lot!), and we haven't even come close to visiting them all.? I'm betting the area you live in has more than you would have thought, too.? Take the kids on a tour of parks for an entire day and discover what your city/area has to offer!

1.? A Lemonade Stand!? no summer is complete without one!

Do you have any other great ideas for last minute Summer Fun?? Share!? Share!? Share!

I will be linking up with Top Ten Tuesday at Many Little Blessings!

Workers Comp Lawyer Durham | Personal Injury Lawyer Durham ...

A recent article from WRAL.com about a semi-truck striking a police cruiser?illustrates the risks of the profession. A routine traffic stop was turned into a potential tragedy when a semi-truck swerved into the vehicle. Police officers are unique in that they often are forced to put themselves into harm?s way, something that can?t be said of many other jobs. Injuries on the job for police offers are much more common.

Take a look at the article and think for a moment. Have you ever been driving for work and come close to an accident? Or carrying out another work duty where an accident almost occurred? It may be a good idea to think about personal injury and workman?s comp and how they could apply if those accidents did ever happen!

Apple considers partnership with Twitter

News

Apple is considering an investment in social media giant Twitter according to reports, with the tech company looking to broaden its social network field.

The New York Times believes Apple, which has been extremely successful in creating hardware and the app, music and movie iTunes platform, has had little influence in social networks.

?Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value Twitter at more than US$10 billion, up from an US$8.4 billion valuation last year,? NYT?s sources said.

While the companies are not currently negotiating, early talks ?are a sign that they may form a stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from the likes of Google and?Facebook,? the newspaper said.

However, reports from the Wall Street Journal contend the discussions were held more than a year ago, with little result.

?Apple and Twitter Inc. held discussions more than a year ago about Apple possibly making a strategic investment in the short-messaging service? The discussions between Apple and Twitter didn?t immediately result in a deal and aren?t currently active, people familiar with the matter say,? The WSJ said.

?People close to Twitter have said that the San Francisco company is ahead of 2012 revenue projections laid out last year and that the company has largely ruled out acquisitions as it builds its business for a potential initial public offering in a year or so,?

However, if the NYT reports are correct the relationship could see a greater integration of Twitter into Apple?s iOS and Mac products.

New York Times believes that ?such a deal would give Apple more access to Twitter?s deep understanding of the social Web, and pave the way for closer Twitter integration into Apple?s products.?

Apple and Twitter have shared a close relationship in the past, with Twitter vice president, Kevin Thau working with Apple in a full time role and in an earlier interview, Twitter?s chief executive Dick Costolo said ??we think of [Apple] as a company that our company looks up to.?

Apple?s iOS 6 will feature increased Facebook and Twitter integration in spring, when it is launched, while OS X Mountain Lion will receive a social networking update at the same time.

China surges to top of medals table on Olympics day two

China surged clear at the top of the Olympic medals table on Sunday, adding two more golds to their opening day haul as swimming star James Magnussen put Australia on course for relay glory.

After dominating day one of competition with four gold medals, Chinese athletes hit paydirt once again with wins in shooting for Guo Wenjun before synchronised divers Wu Minxia and He Zi triumphed at the Aquatics Centre.

Guo successfully defended her 10m air pistol title with a thrilling last-shot finish at the Royal Artillery Barracks to overhaul France?s Celine Goberville, who had led going into the last round.

?I just focused on doing my best on the final shot,? Guo said, adding: ?I think everyone is good, I just never give up.?

Legendary diver Wu meanwhile clinched her third consecutive gold medal in the 3m springboard synchronised after wins in 2004 and 2008.

But while China celebrated their burgeoning gold haul, hosts Great Britain were still waiting for their first win with cyclist Lizzie Armitstead having to settle for silver in a thrilling road race won in driving rain by Marianne Vos of the Netherlands.

United States shooter Kim Rhode meanwhile took the gold medal in the women?s skeet, her fifth consecutive visit to the podium following medals at the Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics.

Elsewhere Sunday the women?s gymnastics competition was rocked by a failed drugs test, as organisers launched a probe into rows of empty seats at venues.

In the pool, world champion Magnussen ? tipped to be one of the stars of the Games ? dived in at the last change to reel in US veteran Jason Lezak and lift Australia into Sunday night?s relay final as top qualifiers.

It was Magnussen?s first swim at the Games and the ?Missile? delivered on his brash confidence, clocking a sizzling 47.35 seconds to surge past Lezak (48.04).

Defending Olympic champions America were second quickest ahead of Russia and France.

?I felt nice and relaxed in the first 50 and I just let the crowd carry me home at the end,? Magnussen said.

The Americans, who have won eight of the 10 Olympic gold medals awarded in the event, are expected to bring in big guns Nathan Adrian, Cullen Jones and Michael Phelps for Sunday night?s final.

US teenager Missy Franklin, swimming in seven events, was second-quickest.

Uzbek gymnast Luiza Galiulina was provisionally suspended after testing positive for the banned diuretic furosemide, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced.

Galiulina underwent a drugs test on July 25, three days before the start of the women?s artistic gymnastics competition.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the London Olympics, Sebastian Coe, insisted most venues were full of spectators as organisers launched a probe into blocks of empty seats at some events.

Sun Yang led the way into the men?s 200m freestyle semi-finals just one day after he gave China it?s first men?s swimming title.

Coe said unoccupied seats at some venues were due to accredited officials still working out which events to attend, but he said he had visited four events on Saturday which were full to capacity.

?Let us put this in perspective. Those venues are stuffed to the gunnels. The public are in there,? Coe said.

?There are tens of thousands of people at this moment within the accredited ?family? that are trying to figure out what their day looks like, where they are going to be asked to go to, frankly working out how you divide your time.?

In other action on Sunday, the United States? collection of NBA multi-millionaires, who are expected to cruise to a successful defence of the basketball title, were facing France in their opening game.

Over at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova takes on Israel?s Sharar Peer as the women?s tennis first round is completed.

Former world number one Novak Djokovic and home hope Andy Murray, who was knocked out of the doubles on Saturday, are also in action.

A total of 14 medals are up for grabs on Sunday, with two also on offer in judo and weightlifting, as well as one each in fencing and archery.

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: How To Hire The ...

By Russell D. Nheumane

The Internet requires that businesses have significant ecommerce web development to be able to stay competitive. For owners of web design services, selecting a company that provides ecommerce solutions can almost ensure an influx of new customers, if it is done right. But, site owners need to be quite specific about what they want when hiring ecommerce design services. This includes tools for sending and receiving payments, shipment options, and user friendly website design.

The site and business needs to be examined to understand what it needs before the search for a web designer should begin. Ecommerce is a constantly changing field and much can depend on the products the owner is selling and how the owner wants those products presented. Ecommerce web development experts can also help site owners decide what should be on the site, but it is very helpful for the site owner to have already spent time thinking this through.

After deciding what an owner desires to achieve from the ecommerce site, the next step is to understand what services most developers offer. This is often done in consultation with the developer, but can be done alone too. Payment acceptance and processing ought to be one item that every ecommerce site includes. These tools permit the owner to process payments from customers in a wide variety of formats. The very least that should be expected to be provided is credit card and payment system services. For sites that provide items, it is also important to have some kind of shipment interface and program as well.

Once the plan is decided on for the services needed for the site and the owner's needs, web design quotes should be obtained. It's important for the owner not to feel required to utilize a developer just because that developer was consulted during planning, getting quotes from multiple service providers is important. This will make sure that the owner has the largest selection of qualified providers available to compare.

Selecting the best firm is the result of following some specific steps on the part of the site owner. The most important step is outlining the website plan and how the site fits into that plan. Next the owner should learn as much as he or she can about ecommerce design solutions so that the owner can know what to discuss with developers. Finally, the owner should get many quotes to ensure the best developer is selected for the job.

it just takes one bad seed to cause problems and every one else suffers.... I had animal control out and they did not mention to me to raise my fence and I have 5ft. They just said the state law superceeds local law, and if my dogs "look" or "appear" to be able to jump the fence and someone complains, they can take the dogs regardless if they are harmless.

It's about our rights and freedoms afforded us by the bill of rights. They have no way to enforce this pitiful document and it ONLY applies to the unincorporated areas of the county. That's about one half the population. Many of us live in the country because we don't want government interference in our affairs. My dogs are spayed. That's MY business. Not otero couny's and I want to keep it that way. What will it be next? Involuntary sterilization of people to curb irresponsible breeding among that species? The government needs to stick with providing essential services and leave me the hell alone.

Not otero couny's and I want to keep it that way. What will it be next? Involuntary sterilization of people to curb irresponsible breeding among that species? The government needs to stick with providing essential services and leave me the hell alone.

Please show me where it says in the bill of rights that you can breed your pet to exhaustion. Like it or not, the government has to pay for unwanted animals, either thru housing them in a shelter or euthanizing when they run out of room.

There are many rights provided us that are not specially set forth in the bill of rights. The number of children we have ... or don't have comes to mind. Don't get me wrong. I am passionate about animal welfare and responsible breeding as is evidenced by my own dogs being spayed. I know there is a problem but it's not gonna get solved by more legislation. Education and low cost spay/neuter clinics is a viable step in the right direction. Rebuttal?

What gives you the right to tell me! The property owner how to manage my own property, and where I can put my livestock confinements. When you start to pay for my property or become my landlord then you can tell me where, and how to build my confinements. I moved out to the county to get away from the city?s stupid ordnances, or is this a new way of getting more money to fund your new projects without calling it a tax. I am concerned as I am looking into rabbits or chickens as a 4-h project for my kids. 100ft away from our dwelling is too far to ensure safety of the small animals. We have had coyote and bobcat incidents in our neighborhood. I hve a 75lb dog that is an active dog that barks at passers by and can put her frontlegs over our fence. She is a big dog and can "look"(hopelessly goofy) intimidating but she is unable to jump our 4 ft fence. She was injured about 3-4 yrs ago. She can run, stand on hind legs while her front legs are on top fence rail but she CAN NOT jump it.

Actually, you can legally let your livestock run free as this is a fence out state, but most of us with common sense and common decency pen our animals up. I too will be voting against Susan Flores in the next cycle of Commission elections. She doesn't even have the decency to answer your e-mails. When confronted about the last livestock ordinance she proposed, she wouldn't even take credit for it. She needs to go!

Daily Kos: Democrats, Small Business, & Cash Mobs in Watauga ...

Watauga County, North Carolina has a strong and active local Democratic Party. We think out of the box, run strong local candidates, and never stop trying to move our county "forward," even when we get trounced as we did in 2010. After a good cry, we just pick ourselves up off the floor, dust off the damage, and head for the next open door. That's how we were able to defeat Amendment One in this year's primary election.

We are involved in numerous community outreach projects (local homeless shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, etc), but yesterday we held our first "Cash Mob."

Bigger cities have been organizing Cash Mobs for about a year now.

The general idea is to encourage people to go into small, local businesses and spend their money, en masse, to give the business owner a little bit of economic stimulus.... ...the first gathering called a ?Cash Mob? appears to have been held in Buffalo, NY, on August 5, 2011, and was organized by blogger, Christopher Smith.
Cash Mobs are not generally defined as "political events," in the traditional sense of the word, and we don't know if other political parties are engaging in this excellent idea, but we decided to give one a go. ?I'll tell you why and share our pictures below the orange.

Which political party, if any, is really supportive of small, local businesses?

Democrats know that small businesses are the engines that drive our economy. From family-owned restaurants to high-tech startups, entrepreneurs and small-business owners are crucial elements of our communities and our economy. They ?represent the essence of the American spirit.?

The GOP "has done a nice job of coming up with a talking point that appeals to the Republican base, that presents the president as contemptuous of the private sector and dismissive of small business," said Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of The Rothenberg Political Report, a nonpartisan political newsletter.

Republicans: "We're for small business!"

Democrats: "No. WE'RE for small business!"

The American Public: "You both suck."

Lots of talk, lots of spin, and still hard times for local business. ?The Watauga County Democratic Party decided to prove who really stands for small, local business once and for all in the name of all politics is local.

The Democrats' first stop yesterday was"Village Hardware" in Blowing Rock, NC. ?The business is owned and operated by a local family that has found its store now off the beaten path. Oh, and did I mention? When we called ahead of time to let them know we were coming (a very good idea BTW), they quietly admitted they were "registered" Republicans. All the better! After all, what has the local Republican Party ever done for them!

Here we are in all our glory (and having an absolute blast!):

We collectively spent over $800 in just an hour in this small business:

We bought brooms and birdseed and glue and commode parts and hoes:

Sylvia was having a hard time with her choices, so she focused on birthday presents:

Some folks spent a couple of dollars; others spent much more. The checkout line got really long:

A quick break before our next stop:

Onward to "Papa Joe's Restaurant" for lunch! Yes, that's right. No "Chick-Fil-A" on our schedule.

About 50 of us showed for lunch and spent around $500 with the fine folks at Joe's:

Here's Cullie Tarleton. ?He's our very excellent candidate for NC House. He has been targeted by both Art Pope's flying monkeys as well as our state Democratic House Caucus as one of (if not the) top seats in play for the state House this year. Show him some love, why don't ya:

Oh, and a special shout out to Lonnie Webster, who took these great pics yesterday. The local press published our original press release about the Cash Mob but didn't show for the actual event. ?we're following up today with a press release. And we're already planning our next mob!

Thanks for letting me share. For more information on cash mobs, go here.

Communities Use Church Facilities, Court Says "No"

Megachurches are changing. For decades the popular model for church growth was predicated on large facilities hosting many excellent programs to attract the unchurched. But for a number of reasons, not the least being the prevalence of "missional" thinking, some megachurches are trying to adjust their model to be more community-focused. They're asking themselves, "How can we serve our community?" rather than "How can we serve our attenders?"

One example is Granger Community Church in Indiana. Pastor, author, and blogger Tim Stevens has written about Granger's shifting philosophy of ministry, and last week these shifts resulted in a name change for the church's property. Stevens writes:

In our recent revisioning project, we intentionally decided to activate the campus. That is, rather than have a church campus that is primarily focused on weekend services for the congregation?we decided to turn the purpose of the property toward reaching the community.... We realized one of the first things we needed to do was re-brand the entire church property. No longer will it be called Granger Community Church. Instead, we will call it the Granger Commons.

Stevens admits the shift in naming won't immediate result in a shift in perceptions, but he adds, "It may take a few years, but we truly believe that there will be a day in the future when most people in our region will see the Granger Commons as a place of help and hope for the entire community."

What Granger and other large churches are doing with their facilities is laudable, and is actually a throwback to an earlier day when church properties were often the social and cultural hub of a community--not just a place of worship for members one day a week.

But at the same time churches are moving toward welcoming the community into their facilities, legal rulings are restricting how communities can use church buildings.

The 7th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals ruled on Monday that two schools in Wisconsin violated the Constitution by holding graduation ceremonies at churches. The court said, "the ceremonies were unconstitutional" and "students were exposed to religious messages in the form of a giant cross that hung over the church's sanctuary and religious pamphlets on middle school and high school ministries and hymnals in the pews."

In many communities churches are the only gathering spaces large enough to accommodate events like graduations, and churches are often pleased to partner with school district and civic authorities for such events. But the federal court's ruling may cause communities to think twice before accepting invitations from a church to use their facilities.

The Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reports:

The opinion does not seem to prevent schools from holding graduation in a church.... Rather, it is the circumstances under which the ceremony was held - religious literature on display, an uncovered cross at the front - that the court said made the ceremony unconstitutional.

With churches like Granger seeking to have the community utilize their buildings and property more, it is likely we will encounter more legal scuffles about church and state matters in the years ahead.

Terri Covington walks past what is left of her car and mobile home near Keller, Wash., on?Friday.
(Full-size photo)(All photos)

Lurae Kanzleiter still has nightmares about the tree that crashed through her bedroom ceiling in Keller, Wash., nine days?ago.

?You could hear the tree going ?crack, crack, crack,??? Kanzleiter said. ?Something just told me to get out of that bedroom, and I?m so thankful that we?did.?

She and her family escaped just seconds before the massive trunk ripped through their mobile home during a storm July 20 that ravaged the Inland Northwest with thunder, flash floods, hurricane-force winds and hail the size of golf balls. The event marked the peak of a series of storms that began on July 13 and left 16 Eastern Washington counties in a state of?emergency.

Some areas reported winds stronger than 85 mph and streets buried under more than a foot of water that accumulated in less than half an hour. The storm left two dead in the region: a man driving a truck at Priest Lake and a woman who had been camping in the mountains near Curlew in Ferry?County.

Kanzleiter is one of many throughout the region still struggling to get back on their feet in the wake of the?disaster.

The Ferry County Public Utility District estimated that about 90 percent of the county had power back by Friday morning, but officials said the ones still without electricity live farther out, in the least accessible?areas.

Tree trunks, limbs and debris have been cleared from the main roads throughout the county. Forest Service roads, however, still need a lot of?work.

The storm rendered Kanzleiter?s home condemned, as damage to the wiring turned it into an electrical hazard. Her two dogs and two birds are still living in the undamaged half of the?house.

The storm damaged 20 homes and destroyed six in Keller ? a small unincorporated community of Colville tribal members in southeastern Ferry County that sits miles apart from its closest neighbors, Mason City to the southeast and Republic to the?north.

About 20 homes in the community are still without?power.

Since the night of the storm, Kanzleiter has been living in a gym at the Keller Community Center with her husband and three children. About 30 people took shelter there the night after the?storm.

The building became the hub for the community?s recovery effort. All but Kanzleiter and her family have moved into local hotels since?then.

The tribe is working on finding the family a more private place to stay for a while, tribal spokeswoman Kathy Moses?said.

?(We?re) just running into issues with the shortage of housing on the reservation,? Moses?said.

Moses was unsure how long the family will have to stay in the community?center.

With roads blocked by fallen trees and diminished communications from downed power lines, community members immediately banded together to take care of those with the most urgent needs. Hundreds in the community stepped in to serve food or clear roads of fallen?trees.

By Thursday, the shelter continued to serve about 220 people per meal, including residents and?workers.

Yancy Epperson, who oversees the cleanup crews in Keller, estimates that about 85 percent of those working on the recovery effort are tribal?members.

Epperson has nine crews who have been out clearing logs and branches from roads and homes since the storm hit. The storm gave many in the community a chance to put their logging experience to good use, he?said.

?Let?s put them to work (and) put some money in their pockets,? Epperson said. ?Some of them have been unemployed for two?years.?

Though the major storm is over, many of the trees in Keller still have unseen fractures. As the wind picked up a little Saturday afternoon a new hazard emerged for the cleanup crews, Moses?said.

?It started snapping the trees and it sounded like gunshots were going off,? she said. ?It?s pretty unsafe out?there.?

The state has also set up on the scene to help meet the residents? basic needs. The Department of Natural Resources brought trailers on Monday equipped with freezers and refrigerators to keep food from?spoiling.

Officials have provided a laundry service, portable showers and a hand-washing station next to the community center. They also drive a potable water truck around the reservation every day to assist those who don?t have access to drinkable?water.

FEMA officials will survey the county this week to assess who will receive federal assistance. State and local officials will continue door-to-door checks in Republic, while volunteers run a shelter at Republic High?School.

The scale of the disaster eclipses any wildfires, ice storms or floods the county has had in recent memory, said Brian Dansel, chairman of the Ferry County Board of?Commissioners.

Even so, the community response has kept things together fairly well, officials?say.

Priest Lake State Park is also getting back to normal, despite some closed trails and one cabin that remains?inaccessible.

The entire staff at the park worked to clean up the damage after the storm. Workers had a lot of help from visitors, as well, said Loni Johnson, park?manager.

?The campers were fantastic,? Johnson said. ?I just can?t say enough about how accommodating they?were.?

Cheating Or Not: What Does "Being Faithful" Actually Mean?

Posted on July 28, 2012
Filed Under Dating Coaching, Pillar Articles, Relationship Management

?
How Do You Define Cheating? How come this topic hasn?t been discussed more frequently? I mean, there?s zero doubt that infidelity is a factor in countless broken relationships.

Perhaps we encounter so little elaboration on the subject because each of us believes we have a firm grasp of what it means to be ?faithful? to a significant other.

But do we really? And what?s more, does our PARTNER believe the same way WE do? You just can?t make that assumption by default, or else serious trouble will be looming sooner than later.

Clearly, the key is open, honest communication early on.

So why do so many couples leave this topic ?open ended?? The problem arises when neither partner wants to come off as overly jealous or insecure, or when one partner fears that opening such a ?can of worms? will actually trigger jealousy in the other.

Nevertheless, if you care about a relationship, both of you have got to set expectations for yourself and for each other, and agree to them together.

Here are four particular areas that can help focus the somewhat nebulous topic of ?fidelity?, making it easier to talk about and simpler to define.

?
1. Decide What The Structure Of The Relationship Is

I was asked a fascinating question recently during a radio interview. ?So Scot, if you want your wife to agree to a threesome and you think she?s going to object, how do you convince her to agree to it??

My answer caught the host completely off guard. ?You don?t?, I said. ?If you are open to threesomes and you know she isn?t, you shouldn?t have married her to begin with. These are things you bring up with your new girlfriend, not someone you?re already in a committed relationship with.?

The very foundation to trust and fidelity is defining whether you are in an exclusive and monogamous relationship with someone else as opposed to some other kind of relationship.

?Other? in this case can mean you?ve agreed to bring other partners into your sex life together, agree that both partners can have sex with other people, or some mixture of both. No matter what, however, you?ve got to carefully define what?s fair game and what isn?t well ahead of time?before any assumptions are made, and most definitely before you walk down the aisle.

?
2. Set Flirtation Boundaries

Another area discussion involves how ?flirtation? with other MOTOS (members of the opposite sex) is defined. It?s mission-critical that the two of you agree 100% on what those boundaries are and that they are the same for both partners.

For example, if it?s decided that sexually charged conversation and body language along with playful touch are to be kept within the relationship, then so be it.

There can be no ?double-standard?, however. For example, a woman cannot be of the opinion that all women are generally well-intentioned, but all men are dogs if given the chance.

That train of thought is not only arrogant, it creates an environment where she defends her little wink at the waiter as she touches him on the thigh as ?harmless? even as she objects to her boyfriend or husband even smiling at a waitress.

Where the ?double standard? is in effect, deep resentment surely follows.

?
3. Define Out-Of-Bounds Activity

I find it particularly amazing how many unspoken assumptions are made between men and women in this specific area.

But the truth remains that when it comes to the subject at hand, this is one of the broadest expanses of ?gray area?.

The range of factors at play here is almost mind numbing.

I?ve known at least one couple where one partner felt that kissing other people was NOT cheating, but had somehow let that aspect of their belief system escape coming up in conversation together.

Suffice it to say that the other partner had felt it was implicitly obvious that the two of them shouldn?t be making out with other people if they?re in an ?exclusive? relationship.

But don?t kid yourself. In other cases, the fine line may be much more difficult to draw.

For example, you and your partner may readily agree not to tongue down other people, but what about full-body embraces?

And how about having social contact with exes (or other MOTOS, for that matter)? Is it okay to talk to them on the phone or even have lunch with them sometimes because they?re now ?just friends??

If that?s off the table, is it alright to at least friend them on Facebook? Do you keep their numbers stored in your phone, if for no other reason than so if they call you can know not to answer the phone?

And what about, say, porn? Does looking at other MOTOS naked constitute cheating? How about frequenting strip clubs? No doubt there are a LOT of women out there who don?t view this stuff the same way that a LOT of men do.

You?ve got to talk about all of this, and you?ve got to cover all bases (including first).

?
4. Just Say ?No? To Logical Justification

I?ve always found the whole concept of ?bachelor parties? deeply fascinating. Stereotypically speaking, the infamous sexual trysts that might possibly happen once strippers, etc. get involved are accepted as kind of a ?last hurrah? before the ?constraints? of marital life kick in.

Obviously, most people don?t tell their new wife (or husband, in the case of certain ?bachelorette parties?) what actually happened the night before. The best-case scenario one can hope for is a ?don?t ask, don?t tell policy?.

But the way I see it, if you feel like you?ve got to get one last ?piece? in because you feel as if you?re about to get locked down with a ball and chain, you most definitely shouldn?t be getting married to begin with.

Nevertheless, many people justify bachelor and bachelorette parties as a ?rite of passage?.

This is one clear way that we tend to seek logical justification for behavior that to most observers would constitute cheating. And in fact, we?re talking about actions that even WE would consider unfaithful?if under different circumstances.

I?ve noticed that a surprising number of people?men and women alike?somewhat nihilistically think that all MOTOS will happily cheat, if presented with a tempting opportunity.

Meanwhile, many people of both genders have honorable intentions from the very beginning of always being faithful.

What?s weird is that when one partner is unreasonably jealous to the point of fearing that the other will cheat?or that he or she is already doing so?that fear can eventually become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The faithful partner who is consistently suspected or even flatly accused of cheating finally says to him or herself, ?If I?m going to get treated like I?m a cheater, I might as well make something happen to justify it.?

A similar thought pattern would be, ?If I?m going to be considered a cheater, I might as well get the ?benefits? as well as the penalties.?

The potential danger of extreme jealousy to fidelity in relationships goes even deeper.

When one partner is super jealous, it becomes LESS likely that boundaries will even be discussed. The less jealous partner assumes that ANY discussion on the subject wouldn?t end well.

So each partner is left to decide what constitutes ?cheating? him or herself.

That means that when one?s significant other is the ?ber-jealous type, that less jealous partner?s decisions are indeed made without the other?s input because it?s assumed that EVERYTHING would incite his or her anger anyway.

From there, the proverbial envelope tends to get pushed to the limit because there ARE no established guidelines.

Perhaps subconsciously, some people will go a bit overboard to ?stick it? to a partner whose jealousy they?ve come to resent. Usually, this is taken to the extent that they feel they can reasonably defend if ever caught red-handed.

For example, this can down to semantics. A famous example would be invoking Bill Clinton?s definition of ?sex? versus what Hillary may have thought it meant

As per a memorable example from my coaching experience, one partner may suggest it?s time to ?date other people? but the decision is ultimately made not to. Then, the partner who suggested the idea ends up having sex with someone else, but attempts to logically justify it because he or she never actually ?went on a date? with that other person.

Since the discussion was about ?dating other people? rather than ?being exclusive?, the justification for sex outside the relationship is made.

Ultimately, if you?re in a truly monogamous, exclusive relationship with someone the guidelines have got to be discussed, and no emotional mindset can ever be allowed to blur the lines. It?s really as simple as that?otherwise, there?s cheatin? going on.

?

Obviously, there?s way more that could be covered here. What all-important factors and/or examples have I left out?

And what is your opinion on all of this? What do couples need to discuss, and what should a ?faithful? relationship look like?

Be Good,

Scot McKay

The Olympics and bare feet: What have we learned?

Friday, July 27, 2012

Ethiopian runner Abebe Bikila made history when he earned a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. His speed and agility won him the gold, but it was barefoot running that made him a legend.

When the shoes Bikila was given for the race didn't fit comfortably, he ditched them for his bare feet. After all, that's the way he had trained for the Olympics in his homeland.

Racing shoeless led to success for Bikila, and now, more than 50 years later, runners are continuing to take barefoot strides. Several Olympic runners have followed Bikila and nationally the trend has exploded over the past decade. There's even a national association dedicated to barefoot running. However, scientists are stuck on whether it either prevents or increases injuries.

"Bikila may have been on to something," said Carey Rothschild, an instructor of physical therapy at the University of Central Florida in Orlando who specializes in orthopedic sports injuries. "The research is really not conclusive on whether one approach is better than the other. But what is clear is that it's really a matter of developing a good running form and sticking to it, not suddenly changing it."

Rothschild, a 12-year runner who has completed the Boston Marathon three times, reviewed research and found injuries happened with or without shoes. So she conducted a survey with the help of the Track Shack in Orlando to get to the bottom of the controversy.

What she found was striking.

Most people said they turned to barefoot running in the hopes of improving performance and reducing injuries. Ironically, those who said they never tried it avoided it for fear it would cause injuries and slow their times.

However, research shows that there are risks to running no matter what someone puts on his or her feet.

Barefoot runners tend to land on their mid or forefoot as opposed to the heel, which good athletic shoes try to cushion.

Some studies suggest that barefoot running causes a higher level of stress fractures on the front part of the foot and increased soreness in the calves. But runners who wear athletic shoes can also suffer everything from knee injuries to hip problems, related to repeated stress from impact forces at the heel.

"There is no perfect recipe," said Rothschild, a resident of Winter Park.

In a paper publishing in the August edition of the Journal of Strength And Conditioning, Rothschild reviews the research and provides a guide for those who want to explore barefoot running as a way to train for marathons. It's a 10-12 week program that slowly eases people who run in shoes onto their bare feet.

She suggests getting a thorough physical examination and biomechanical assessment from a physical therapist or other trained professional so that strength and flexibility deficits can be identified and addressed first. That should be done before gradually transitioning to bare feet.

"The bottom line is that when a runner goes from shoes to no shoes, their body may not automatically change its gait," Rothschild said. "But there are ways to help make that transition smoother and lower the risk of injuries."

The researcher concludes that barefoot running in and of itself is neither good nor bad. As with running in shoes, proper training and conditioning are essential.

However, Rothschild does offer a warning.

Anyone with lower extremity or deformity or with a disease that creates a lack of sensation on the feet should probably avoid barefoot running because they can't necessarily feel injuries resulting from running on hard surfaces.

US cruises to lead in men's gymnastics qualifying

LONDON (AP) ? The Americans just might be able to back up their big talk.

While perennial gymnastics powerhouses China and Japan bobbled and wobbled their way through men's qualifying Saturday, the Americans proved they really do have the goods to contend for the gold medal. They didn't count a single fall, and their final score of 275.342 is almost three points ahead of surprising Britain.

"It's not (a pipe dream), and that's what we've been telling the world for the longest time," Danell Leyva said. "Now is when everyone is finally, completely realizing how much we believe in it and today was definite huge proof of that."

The O2 Arena ? where American flags, T-shirts and signs seemed to be everywhere ? erupted in applause when the final scores were posted. The U.S. men looked up from their huddle and noted the marks with a few fist pumps.

Japan, the heavy favorite coming into the meet, is third (270.503) after several uncharacteristic errors by three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura. Defending Olympic champion China, which also has won the last five world titles, is fourth (269.985) after its splat-filled day. Germany and Russia compete later Saturday.

"We studied a lot about the American team already," said Japanese coach Yasunori Tachibana, who sent a scouting party to last month's Olympic trials. "So we knew it was going to be pretty tough."

Team finals are Monday, and the scoring format changes to the three-up, three-count, where three gymnasts compete on each event and all three scores count. But the Americans believe they're actually better built for that high-risk, high-reward formula, and this performance will only fuel their confidence.

The United States hasn't been atop the podium since Bart Conner and the Golden Gang in 1984. It hasn't even been in the same league as China and Japan, really. But after a surprise bronze medal in Beijing and another bronze at last year's world championships, this group has insisted it has the goods to get it done.

They sure looked it Saturday, performing with the kind of swagger usually reserved for the Chinese. Danell Leyva and John Orozco posted the highest individual scores, and the team had the highest total on floor exercise and high bar. They had only three falls the entire day, and counted only four scores below 15.

After captain Jon Horton finished an electrifying high bar routine, he stood on the edge of the podium and popped his uniform so the entire arena could see the "U-S-A" on the front.

"This is the first time I've felt the same mood amongst the team," said USA Gymnastics chairman Peter Vidmar, a member of the 1984 team.

The day didn't look so promising at the start, when Horton went spinning off pommel horse, his ? and the team's ? worst event. But teams can drop their lowest score in qualifying, and the rest of the Americans were quick to erase Horton's. Leyva and Orozco would be welcome on China's or Japan's team after their stylish sets, making their way around the horse with smooth, controlled swings and circles.

Horton redeemed himself with a still rings routine that left spectators crying "Uncle!" He looked as if he was on a spit as he rotated from one skill right into another, and his back was so straight on one plank you could have used it as an ironing board ? provided there was 15-foot ladder handy to reach him.

After slowly closing the gap on each event, the Americans finally took the lead with their dazzling sets on high bar.

Orozco set the tone, getting such great air on his release moves he could almost make eye contact with the folks hanging out on the first concourse. Horton was up next. He's been struggling on high bar the last few months, but there was no cover-your-eyes-and-hide-the-children scariness this time. Once, twice, three times he tossed himself up and over the bar, flipping and twisting before coming down and easily grabbing it.

When his feet hit the mat with a solid thud, he pumped his fists and smiled.

"I jumped up there, man on a mission-type thing," Horton said. "I was really aggressive. I caught all my releases really well ? my last one was just kind of finger-tipped. It was a good set, I was really happy with it."

Leyva closed the show, drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd with his big release moves. When he did a little hop while in a handstand, the audience actually laughed. He let out a roar when he landed his dismount, and his energetic stepfather and coach, Yin Alvarez, let loose with a round of his trademark rhythmic clapping.

With more than a point lead, the Americans breezed through their floor routines. When Leyva finished, Alvarez ? in the stands because only U.S. coach Kevin Mazeika and assistant Tom Meadows can be on the floor during team competition ? rushed down to the railings and yelled, "That was super good!"

"We definitely can carry on the confidence," said rookie Sam Mikulak, the most consistent of the Americans until a fall on high bar. "We just want to stay humbled to make sure we go out and perform to the best of our ability."

The Japanese, meanwhile, need to figure out how they got so far off track.

Normally so stylish and precise that coaches use DVDs of their routines as teaching tools, the Japanese looked disoriented. Kazuhito Tanaka made four big errors in his first three events, including a botch on high bar that left him wildly swinging one-handed, like a child on the monkey bars.

Uchimura's performance was downright baffling. The three-time world champion has been so sublime since winning the silver medal in Beijing that Germany's Philipp Boy, runner-up at worlds the last two years, has joked he was born in the "wrong age." That Uchimura would cement his status as the greatest gymnast ever with the all-around title was all but a given.

But he fell on high bar, not even getting close to the bar on a release move. He then spun off pommel horse, getting up with a baffled look. He rallied from there, however, and wound up fourth in the individual scoring.

"I think more or less we all were thinking about how China was doing today, so it might have affected our performance," Uchimura said through a translator.

The Chinese have run roughshod over the gymnastics world for much of the last decade. They were so much better than the competition, and everyone knew it.

But Chen Yibing and Zou Kai are the only holdovers from the Beijing gold rush, and China is no longer in a class by itself.

China's air of invincibility took its first hit at last year's world championships, where the Chinese finished behind Japan and the United States in qualifying. Yes, it was only qualifying, and they still left the event as they always do ? with index fingers held high in the air and gold medals around their neck. But it was the first time since Athens that they failed to finish first in every phase of a major competition.

A reduction in team size, from six gymnasts in Beijing to five in London, hurt the Chinese even more. After building their team around one- or two-event specialists for so many years, they've been left with gaping holes in their lineups.

What hurt the Chinese most Saturday was simple sloppiness ? shocking for a team once known for its impeccable execution. Chen's parallel bars routine wouldn't cut it for a high school gymnast. Zou Kai, the reigning gold medalist on high bar, probably won't even make the final after a routine that was almost indifferent. Guo Weiyang, pressed into service Wednesday after 2004 pommel horse gold medalist Teng Haibin dropped out with an arm injury, fell on his face on his dismount on floor exercise.

The Chinese had to count not one but two scores below 14 on pommel horse after falls by both Guo and Zhang Chenglong.

"We're not really disappointed because it's been four years and the competitors are improving, there's less discrepancy in their level," Chen said through a translator. "We are still confident in the final."
