San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, Mayor Ed Lee face off at hearing

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fighting to save his career, Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi told the city's Ethics Commission Friday that he committed a crime by bruising his wife's arm during an argument, but also believed political foes could be behind calls for his prosecution and resignation.

Mayor Ed Lee, who suspended Mirkarimi and city for misconduct Mirkarimi in March after the sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment in connection with the New Year's Eve argument, testified hours later that it's the mayor's duty to decide on "a case by case basis" whether an elected official's criminal conviction amounts to official misconduct. Lee also said he would find it "extremely difficult" to work with Mirkarimi if he's able to get his job back.

Lee cited Mirkarimi with misconduct and suspended him without pay in March, shortly after the sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment for bruising his wife's arm during a New Year's Eve dispute.

Lee testified that he suspended Mirkarimi because of the significance of the role of sheriff as one of the top law enforcement positions in the city.

Lee's testimony was interrupted after only about half an hour when commission chairman Benedict Hur announced he'd been instructed to adjourn the session immediately. When the hearing reconvened 90 minutes later, Hur said the commission had been "notified by the San Francisco Police Department that we needed to adjourn the

meeting. There was a security threat that has now been found not to be credible."

Mirkarimi was asked Friday by defense attorney David Waggoner whether he can still be effective as sheriff -- and he said he could.

"I realize the uphill battle that has now been laid in front of me, and I believe that to the eyes of everybody it would seem almost impossible for me to rise to that standard," he said.

Yet, he said, San Francisco has specialized in justice that allows personal redemption, adding: "Never in my wildest dreams did I believe I would become an example of that redemptive process."

The hearing's next public sessions are scheduled for mid-July, although lawyers will spar in coming weeks over whether certain parts of witnesses' written declarations are admissible as evidence. Eventually the five-member Ethics Commission will make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, which ultimately will vote on whether to kick Mirkarimi out of office.

Deputy City Attorney Peter Keith questioned Mirkarimi about his early efforts to downplay the situation. "Sheriff, is domestic violence a private family matter?" Keith asked.

"It is not," Mirkarimi replied, acknowledging that saying just that in January sent the wrong message to the public.

The sheriff said that he knew when he made the remark that he had injured his wife -- Venezuelan former telenovela star Eliana Lopez -- and committed a crime.

Mirkarimi agreed that domestic violence is an underreported crime that often remains hidden if witnesses don't come forward. But he testified that he made no efforts to dissuade Ivory Madison, the neighbor who sparked the investigation by giving her videotape of a tearful Lopez to police, or to smear her in the media.

When Lee gave the just-sentenced Mirkarimi a resign-or-be-suspended ultimatum, "you had let down the sheriff's department?" Keith asked.

"Yes," Mirkarimi said. But asked whether he should've resigned, he replied "that given the choice that was presented to me by the mayor, I did exactly as I should."

Later, questioned by Waggoner about the argument, Mirkarimi said: "I wish I could turn back the clock, of course; I feel horrible, ashamed." He also said he made "a terrible mistake" in ever having calling it "a private matter, a family matter.''

Mirkarimi, a San Francisco supervisor from 2005 until his election as sheriff in November, hadn't even been sworn in when he had the altercation with Lopez. He was sentenced to one day in his own jail, three years of probation, one year of domestic-violence counseling, 100 hours of community service and a fine.

Wildfire victims crowd shelters as fight continues

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Fire crews fought to save the U.S. Air Force Academy and residents begged for information on the fate of their homes Wednesday after a night of terror sent thousands of people fleeing a raging Colorado Springs wildfire.

More than 30,000 have been displaced by the fire, including thousands who frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night after it barreled into neighborhoods in the foothills west and north of Colorado's second-largest city. With flames looming overhead, they clogged roads shrouded in smoke and flying embers, their fear punctuated by explosions of bright orange flame that signaled yet another house had been claimed.

"The sky was red, the wind was blowing really fast and there were embers falling from the sky," said Simone Covey, a 26-year-old mother of three who fled an apartment near Garden of the Gods park and was staying at a shelter. "I didn't really have time to think about it. I was just trying to keep my kids calm."

Wilma Juachon sat under a tree at an evacuation center, wearing a mask to block the smoke. A tourist from California, she was evacuated from a fire near Rocky Mountain National Park last week and, now, from her Colorado Springs hotel.

"I said I hope it never happens again, and guess what?" Juachon said.

Constantly shifting winds challenged firefighters trying to contain the 24-square-Mile Waldo Canyon blaze and extinguish hot spots inside the city's western suburbs. The National Weather Service reported 60 mph winds and lightning above the fire Wednesday afternoon.

"It won't stay in the same place," said incident commander Rich Harvey.

Some 3,000 more people were evacuated to the west of the fire, Teller County authorities said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the White House said President Barack Obama will tour fire-stricken areas of Colorado on Friday and thank firefighters battling some of the worst fires to hit the American West in decades.

City Police Chief Richard Carey said Obama's visit to Colorado, considered a key battleground state in the presidential election, would not tax Carey's already-strained police force. Gov. John Hickenlooper said he expected the president might sign a disaster declaration that would allow for more federal aid.

The full scope of the fire remained unknown. So intense were the flames and so thick the smoke that rescue workers weren't able to tell residents which structures were destroyed and which ones were still standing. Steve Cox, a spokesman for Mayor Steve Bach, reported that at least dozens of homes had been consumed, though he had no more precise figure.

Indeed, authorities were too busy Wednesday struggling to save homes in near-zero visibility to count how many had been destroyed in what is the latest test for a drought-parched and tinder-dry state. Crews also were battling a deadly and destructive wildfire in northern Colorado and another that flared Tuesday night near Boulder.

Carey said officials had no plans to release the numbers of homes destroyed ? insisting residents have a right to be told first, in private.

FBI spokesman Dave Joly said federal investigators are working closely with local and state law enforcement to determine if any of Colorado's fires were deliberately set or resulted from criminal activity. He did not elaborate.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said his personnel heroically saved many homes in the midst of the firestorm. The strategy: protecting houses adjacent to those in flames to prevent a domino effect and then racing to the next suburban hot spot, a technique he called "triage." Federal firefighters worked with U.S. Army bulldozer crews from nearby Fort Carson to create perimeter lines.

The Waldo Canyon Fire burned about 10 acres along the southwest boundary of the Air Force Academy campus. No injuries or damage to structures ? including the iconic Cadet Chapel ? were reported. With 90 firefighters battling the flames, Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Gould said 1,500 cadets taking summer classes and more than 1,000 freshmen arriving Thursday will be safe ? with campus ceremonies or housing to be moved away from the fire-hit area or off-campus if needed.

Four firefighting bulldozers were in a convoy heading into the academy Wednesday evening.

The Red Cross struggled to accommodate victims at its shelters, with space enough for perhaps 2,500 people. Most evacuees were staying with family and friends.

Colorado wasn't the only state affected by fire, as several burned throughout the parched West.

Tom Harbour, director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service, said that with several fires burning, there is competition for firefighting resources, but "we're still at a point where we've got lots of available assets to mix and match on individual incidents."

Harbour said there's a difference between what incident commanders want and what they need to fight a fire effectively. And despite some criticism, he said the agency has been working to get equipment where it's needed most. Four military C-130 tankers, which can each carry up to 3,000 gallons of water, are positioned to cover the blazes burning near Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, as well as the entire Front Range if another fire were to break out, he said. At total of 18 air tankers were assigned to wildfires across the region.

Overall, there have been fewer fires and less acreage burned for the first six months of the year than for the same period in the previous six years. Some states are seeing fires earlier this year, but Harbour said resources are far from being exhausted.

"With over 10,000 firefighters in the Forest Service and the ability to get over 700 aircraft of all types, we're feeling cautiously confident when you look at the season as a whole," Harbour said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? A central Utah wildfire has destroyed at least 56 structures, mainly homes, and continues to burn with little containment, authorities said Wednesday. Officials expected the damage estimate to rise considerably as they continue their assessment of the fire-ravaged area between Fountain Green and Fairview and north across the Utah County line. Authorities were about halfway through their damage assessment of a fire that has burned about 46,000 acres, or 72 square miles. Officials returned to an evacuated area and found a woman dead Tuesday.

? Wildfires that have torched more than 128,000 acres and burned dozens of homes in southeastern Montana spread farther Wednesday, with additional evacuations ordered after a blaze south of Roundup jumped a perimeter line built by firefighters. The growing Dahl fire, which has burned more than 60 homes by one estimate, forced an unknown number of residents to leave their homes near its southern flank, on top of an estimated 600 people evacuated the day before.

"That's one of the most dangerous fires in the history of Montana," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from about 2,000 acres to 12,000 acres, or nearly 19 square miles, officials said Wednesday.

(AP) ? Dock workers rushed to unload stacked containers from a cargo ship that arrived in New Jersey from the Middle East on Wednesday after a Coast Guard inspection team heard knocking for about two hours that suggested stowaways might be inside one of the boxes.

More than a dozen ambulances and law enforcement officials met the 850-foot Ville D'Aquarius when it docked early Wednesday at Port Newark, one of the nation's busiest ports. Large mechanical cranes began unloading containers from the ship.

By midday Wednesday, all but one ambulance had quietly left the pier. By evening, officials had inspected 150 of the 200 containers authorities believe could be carrying people. The ship has 2,000 containers altogether.

The Coast Guard team had boarded the ship outside New York Harbor early Wednesday as the ship prepared to dock, spokesman Charles Rowe said. The officers were knocking on a bulkhead, or partition, of the ship as a routine security check and heard knocks back, he said, but they couldn't pinpoint the source of the sound. The return knocks ended after about two hours, Rowe said.

The team followed protocol and didn't open containers at sea in order to control the situation, he said.

Drew Barry, of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association, said he boarded the vessel about 20 miles offshore to help pilot it into port.

"There are at least 30 to 40 containers on top of the hatch cover, and I don't know how many more below it," Barry said. "If there are people down there, with no food and water for days, they're probably pretty desperate by now."

Shipping containers are steel boxes, usually 8 feet wide and 8- to 10-feet high and either 20- or 40-feet long, designed to withstand the rigors of the high seas and are strong enough to be stacked several high.

They normally can be opened only from the outside. There's hardly any ventilation.

Rowe said it was taking about eight minutes to check each container ? unloading it off the ship, opening it up and X-raying it if necessary.

The Department of Homeland Security, which was also involved in the investigation, said Wednesday night that its officers and agents were prepared to continue examining containers through the night.

The container ship, which a manifest said was carrying machine parts to Norfolk, Va., was loaded in India, Rowe said.

The ship began its voyage May 30 in the United Arab Emirates, then made one stop in Pakistan and two stops in India. Its last port before Newark was in Egypt on June 15.

Speaking at an unrelated news conference, Andrew McLees, special agent in charge of Homeland Security investigations for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the ship's origin and itinerary prompted the initial search.

"The routing of the ship and the ports of call was what led to the actions," McLees said.

Michael Ward, the FBI's top official in New Jersey, said the response was appropriate given the port's vulnerability. The area is considered a prime potential target for terrorists.

"You're going to get a response like this any time you have these types of facts," Ward said. "It was an appropriate response which we did out of an abundance of caution."

Shipping companies are legally responsible for keeping stowaways off their vessels, said Frank Atcheson, a maritime lawyer based in North Bergen, N.J. When stowaways are found, the companies are liable not only for fines but also must pay to house the stowaways where they are found and for secure transportation back to where they originated.

Between January 1998 and Dec. 16, 2011, more than 13,000 stowaways were found in more than 4,000 incidents around the world, according to the International Maritime Organization.

Some of the higher-profile discoveries of recent years: 22 Chinese men, all in good health, arrived in Seattle in 2006; 32 Chinese men, also in good health, were found in Los Angeles in 2005; eight people, most of them Turkish, were found dead along with five survivors in a ship in Ireland in 2001.

Minor and Major Car Damages-Insurance Quotes and Repair Car ...

?

Minor and Major Car Damage

Minor vs. Major Repairs in Auto Accidents...

In the auto body world, there is still a difference between major and minor collision damage, but you?re not likely to see it reflected in the bill any more. Today?s cars are mostly built with unibody frames, made of lighter materials and designed to absorb impact?great for safety and fuel efficiency, not so great when it comes to repair. Knowing the difference between major and minor collision damage and what it takes to repair it may help you understand your quotes and why even fender benders can cost over $1,000 to fix.

Insurance Companies? Idea of ?Major? Damage

We?ll get to what we mean my major collision damage shortly, but insurance companies deem a car undrivable if certain systems or signals are impaired. Immediate repairs are needed for:

    • Leaking coolant
    • Deployed airbags
    • Damaged suspension
    • Missing lights
    • Broken windows
    • Door or trunks that cannot close
    • Any dangling pieces from the vehicle

Driving an ?undrivable? car could create coverage headaches down the road. While you may technically be able to drive a car with some of these issues, it?s best not to.

When Minor Becomes Major

The real distinction between minor and major collision damage has to do with the depth of the damage?whether or not the damage affected the vehicle?s integrity or structural support. For instance, damage to a door panel may be minor?limited to the skin (outer panel) or major?affecting an interior intrusion beam. In this example, repairing minor damage may involve repairing the outer panel by hammering out dents, sanding and repainting (we?re simplifying, of course) or replacing the outer panel. Repairing major damage, however, requires replacing the entire door. What repairs are needed must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Some damage is nearly always ?major,? like damage to the hood of your car. The hood is designed to crumple to absorb the impact rather than continue to transfer the momentum to the car?s passengers. Attempting to hammer out a damaged hood compromises the component?s ability to absorb subsequent impact, which significantly increases the risk of injury for those inside.

Minor vs. Major Damage Repair Costs

Some damage is more cost-effective when treated as ?major,? even if it isn?t. There are some pieces like bumpers that may be salvaged rather than replaced. But to get a damaged bumper and the area surrounding it to look like new requires a lot of labor. In many situations, replacing a bumper or a panel is more cost-effective. You may request aftermarket or reconditioned components be used in the repair to keep costs down. However, depending on the piece,?OEM parts may be recommended for safety and/or warranty reasons.

For all damage?minor or major?you want to restore your car to its pre-collision appearance (or better). That requires a professional paint job, and that is often a significant portion of the repair bill.

If there are ever costs for your repairs that you don?t understand, ask. A reputable garage like Quanz Advanced Auto Care will be happy to explain the cost for both parts and labor necessary to restore your car?s appearance and ensure it is safe to drive.

Acclaimed screenwriter Nora Ephron dead at 71

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, known for romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," as well as books and essays, has died in New York after battling leukemia. She was 71.

Ephron, who had suffered from acute myeloid leukemia, died on Tuesday evening at New York's Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center surrounded by her family, they said in a statement.

Reactions poured in from around the arts and entertainment community for the screenwriter who delighted millions with her flair for comedy, romance and the ability to tackle serious subjects with insight.

"She brought an awful lot of people a tremendous amount of joy. She will be sorely missed," her publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, said in a statement.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called her death "a devastating one" for the city's arts and cultural community, and the Los Angeles-based Directors Guild of America called her "an inspiration for women filmmakers when there were few."

Writer and actress Carrie Fisher called Ephron "inspiring, intimidating, and insightful" and actor Martin Landau said she was "able to accomplish everything she set her mind to with great style."

Ephron, who often parlayed her own love life into movies like "Heartburn" and gave her acerbic take on aging in the 2010 essay collection, "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections," had kept her illness largely private except for close friends and family.

"At some point, your luck is going to run out ... You are very aware with friends getting sick that it can end in a second," Ephron told Reuters in a 2010 interview while promoting the book.

The elegant Ephron, known for habitually dressing in black, urged aging friends and readers to make the most of their lives.

"You should eat delicious things while you can still eat them, go to wonderful places while you still can ... and not have evenings where you say to yourself, 'What am I doing here? Why am I here? I am bored witless!'" she told Reuters.

She began her career as a journalist but transitioned into movies, leaving behind a legacy of more than a dozen films, often featuring strong female characters, that she either wrote, produced or directed. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for "Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and the drama "Silkwood" in which Meryl Streep played an anti-nuclear activist.

Other romantic comedies included "You've Got Mail," starring Meg Ryan, and her last film "Julie & Julia" in 2009, which had Streep portraying the fearless celebrity cook Julia Child.

Ephron also wrote for the stage, authoring the 2002 play "Imaginary Friends" about the rivalry of authors Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman, and "Love, Loss and What I Wore," with her sister Delia, in 2009.

NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, HOLLYWOOD

Born May 19, 1941 in New York City and raised in Beverly Hills by screenwriter parents, Ephron worked briefly as a White House intern before going into journalism. She quickly became known as a humorist with essays on subjects ranging from food and fashion to feminism.

She started in the entertainment industry while married to her second husband, The Washington Post's famed Watergate investigative reporter Carl Bernstein.

She helped rewrite a version of the script for the movie "All The President's Men," about Bernstein and Bob Woodward's uncovering of the political scandal that led to the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. Although that screenplay was not used, it led to a TV movie screenwriting job for Ephron.

Her big movie break came after a messy divorce from Bernstein, which was the genesis for her 1983 novel "Heartburn" that she later adapted into the bittersweet hit film of the same name starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

That film ushered in a string of box office successes in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "When Harry Met Sally," "Michael" with John Travolta, "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," that saw Ephron gradually add producer and director to her resume and become one of Hollywood's most successful makers of romantic comedies.

Although her movies raked in tens of millions of dollars at box offices worldwide, Ephron never won the industry's highest honor, an Academy Award.

After box office flops "Hanging Up" and "Lucky Numbers" in 2000, Ephron focused on essays, writing for the stage, and blogging for the online news site The Huffington Post.

Her humorous 2006 collection "I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman" became a bestseller on the New York Times list.

At the time of her death, Ephron had a biographical movie about singer Peggy Lee in development that was due to star Reese Witherspoon, according to the Internet movie website, IMDB.com.

Ephron was married three times and is survived by her husband of more than 20 years, writer Nicholas Pileggi, and two children with Bernstein.

Exxon's CEO: Climate, energy fears overblown

(AP) ? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in U.S. oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry's ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East, the world's most important oil and gas-producing region.

"No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies," he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session after, he addressed three major energy issues: Climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

Andrew Weaver, chairman of climate modeling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson's characterization of climate modeling. He said modeling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely. And he said adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Legislation or regulation that would help slow the emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon's profit.

DRILLING

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" have alarmed a public that doesn't understand drilling practices ? or math, science or engineering in general. He blamed "lazy" journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don't investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said. But those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life threatening nor long lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry's biggest challenge, he said, is "taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks."

ENERGY SECURITY

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. "Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded," he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn't matter where the U.S. gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the U.S. used only oil from North America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the U.S. and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the U.S. no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region's security, Tillerson said.

Users of Windows Phone might have felt a bit put out at the news that Windows Phone 8, with all its fancy new features, would not be coming to their hardware ? even the flagship Nokia Lumia 900. But all is not lost: one of the cooler pieces, the customizable start screen, will in fact be coming to older handsets. And Microsoft has just put up a little demo of it on video.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't mean we get privileged information about Microsoft's products and services, nor does it influence our opinion of them.)

No doubt it's a cool feature for homescreen customization, more straightforward than Android's widgets and more robust than iOS's... nothing. Most users will be happy to have the extra functionality.

But there's still consternation among purchasers of the much-hyped Lumia 900: many feel it was little more than a bait and switch to sell the device as a top-of-the-line one only to make it obsolete almost instantly with a new OS it can't use. There's truth to that, and Android and iOS customers know the sting of seeing a new version of their favored OS debut with no plans to bring it to older devices.

The update should come to any phone currently running Windows?7.5 "Mango." There's a little more info here at the page for the update, but at the moment there are only a couple features listed, and no date for release.

First Look and Review! Carthay Circle Restaurant in Disney ...

After years of watching the progress of Disney California Adventure?s expansion, and in recent months being able to see the tower of Carthay Circle Theater from behind construction walls, it?s so surreal that I have now actually dined there?twice!

*Please note, the lighting inside Carthay at night is so dark. Many of my photos do not do it justice.

Carthay Circle Restaurant Marquee

Carthay Circle Premiere!

Atmosphere

Inspired by the original Carthay Circle Theatre in Hollywood where Walt Disney?s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered in 1937, the restaurant is about as close to a true replica as you can get.

The theming inside is true to the period as well. It features fabulous old photos of Walt as well as memorabilia from Snow White. From the moment you walk into Carthay Circle Restaurant, you feel as though you have stepped back in time; back to the ?Golden Age? of Hollywood.

When facing Carthay, there are three doors. The two on the left are entrances to the restaurant, and the door to the right is the entrance to the private 1901 Lounge (for which we will soon have a review, too!).? Lovely cast members are there to get the door for you and welcome you to Carthay Circle.

Welcome to Carthay

Upon entering there is a rather large lounge area. To the left is a spacious waiting area to enjoy after you?ve checked in for your meal, and to the right there is a separate room ? The Carthay Circle Lounge ? where the bar and extra seating is located.

Carthay Circle Lounge

In the lounge, you can get drinks and small bites.?No reservations are needed to visit the lounge, and you are more than welcome to grab a drink or appetizer while you are waiting for your table.

Unfortunately, we didn?t have a chance to try the lounge, but we will be back for a full review soon!

Reception/Waiting Area

The reception desk and waiting area are quite spacious. Here you will find plenty of seating and lots of fun memorabilia to look at.

Several images from the evening Snow White premiered hang next to a ?Police Pass? from that night and a gorgeous display of Seven Dwarfs animation cells, which were said to be the only animation art that hung in the home of Walt Disney.

Since you will be more than likely overwhelmed by the beauty of the reception area, friendly cast members point you in the right direction to check-in.

Once it is time to be taken to your table, you are given an option: stairs or elevator to the dining room?? We took a different route on each visit!

When you have reached the top floor, you enter a gorgeous photo-lined hallway that leads you to the main dining room of Carthay.

The ceiling mural featuring paintings of Snow White backgrounds is very subtle. There are no characters, but if you know what you?re looking at, it does seem very familiar.

Eats

Chef Andrew Sutton from Napa Rose serves as Executive Chef here at Carthay Circle while Gloria Tae, also from Napa Rose is on board as Chef de Cuisine.

While Napa Rose focuses on a Northern California type of cuisine, Carthay Circle dishes are inspired by sunny Southern California.?As I write this post, I have eaten at Carthay twice, once with a fixed menu and once ordering off of the ?Summer? dinner menu. So, photos will be from both meals.

Summer Dinner Menu

Place Setting

Bread Service
Bread service at Carthay was different on each of my two visits. The first night (the fixed menu and special event), we were served Sourdough with Red Bell Pepper Hummus.

The bread is not served warm, which I prefer; but the Red Bell Pepper Hummus was fabulous, so I didn?t mind so much!

Sourdough Bread with Red Bell Pepper Hummus Spread

The second visit included Sourdough with Salted Butter.?I love salted butter. It?s so simple, but really gives the butter a great flavor.

The bread was again served at room temperature.?So, I?m guessing that this is the way the bread is served at all times.

Sourdough with Salted Butter

Appetizers
We tried the House Biscuits, which I highly recommend.?The night that we ate at Carthay with a fixed menu, I was so sad that the biscuits weren?t being served. So when we were seated for the second visit, I immediately told our server we needed those ASAP!

House Biscuits Served with Apricot Honey Butter

The biscuits are stuffed with white cheddar, bacon, and jalapeno, and served with apricot honey butter.?Normally I am not a jalapeno fan, but the flavor in these is very mild and the sweetness of the butter also tones it down.

There are a lot of flavors going on inside of these little balls of happiness.?Sweet, savory and spicy; they?re served up warm and gooey. Be careful. I ate almost an entire order.

Additional appetizers we have tried are as follows. First up, the Halibut Ceviche, which was part of our fixed menu, special event meal night. It includes avocado and tomatillo-cilantro essence served with crisp plantain chips.

I will tell you now that I am not a seafood fan, therefore, I am automatically not a ceviche fan. I did however try this because, well, it?s my job.

The dish was fin, and the plantain chips were awesome. My husband, who enjoys halibut and ceviche, ate the entire thing!

Carthay Halibut Ceviche

Another appetizer we received on our fixed menu night were the Signature Firecracker Duck Wings.

These were so amazing that we actually ordered them again on our second visit. The funny thing? I probably wouldn?t have ordered them had I not have been forced to have them at the special event we attended!

They are crispy, spicy, and a little sweet, too. Served with soy, lime, and sriracha chili sauce, they are truly one of my new favorite dishes at the Disneyland Resort.

Signature Firecracker Duck Wings

Entrees
The first entree I experienced at Carthay was the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp on Summer Roasted Corn, Grilled Zucchini and Basil Salsa.?Remember that ?not a seafood fan? thing? The fixed menu at the event helped me to branch out, and I?m so glad that I did.?The shrimp were cooked to perfection and the bacon is actually crispy, which I seldom see in ?bacon wrapped? items.

The soup-ish salsa it came with, though? It was beyond delicious.?I literally wanted to lick my bowl clean.?Had I been at home, I would?ve.?The salsa was so sweet and creamy ? and amazingly enough, I was told by a cast member that there is zero cream used in it, making the dish somewhat ?healthier? for you!

It alone should be an individual menu item.

Carthay Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

On the night of the fixed menu event, my husband had the Sauteed Northern Halibut with Relish of Roasted Bell Pepper, Caper Berry and Orange. He really enjoyed it, and is very picky about his fish, so it must have been fab.?I passed on trying this one?

Carthay Sauteed Northern Halibut

When we came back the following week, we tried some other options. I had the Pappardelle Pasta with House-made Chicken Meatballs, Tear Drop Tomatoes, fresh Basal, and Yellow Tomato Essence. I really enjoyed this dish.

Although this particular pasta is made in house, most of the pastas at Carthay are not. This one is amazing and reminded me of the fresh pastas I had in Italy last year. The sauce was also nice, and the meat balls were tasty.? They really didn?t have a ton of flavor, but overall I really enjoyed the dish.

My husband went with the Udon Noodle Bowl with Red Thai Curry Broth, Shrimp & Mussels, Shitake Mushrooms, Bok Choy, Daikon (white radish, I looked it up!), Mint, Cashews, and fresh Coriander. This dish came highly recommended by one of the managing Cast Members who visited our table.

My husband likes seafood and udon, so he went for it and he really loved it. Me, I tried the noodles ? which were great, but that was as far as I was willing to go!

Desserts
The Dessert menu at Carthay is Seasonal, so it?s exciting to think that it will be changing every few months! We were able to check out a few different dishes, all of which were spectacular.

Carthay Summer Dessert Menu

Personally, I love fruity desserts, so I was really happy about all of the seasonal fruit menu items. On our fixed menu night we were brought out two dishes to try: the first was Toasted Lemon Pound Cake with Fresh Marinated Blueberries, Lemon Curd Cream, and Tahitian Vanilla Chantilly. This dish was fantastic; fresh, tart, creamy with the sweet blueberries. Right up my alley.

I even found a Hidden Mickey while I was eating!!!

Hidden Mickey Blueberries!

Next up was the Seasonal Fruit Pie with Whipped Brown Sugar Sour Cream. Forgive me, but I can?t remember the exact flavor of the fruit. This one was my husband?s and I was enjoying my blueberries so much, I didn?t pay much attention to his.

I did have a bite and it was good; more like a pastry than a pie. I think it was some sort of berry/apple type of number. I?ll pay more attention next time!

Seasonal Country Pie with Whipped Brown Sugar Sour Cream

Saving the best for last, we ordered the Fried Banana Split Monte Cristo Sundae on our second visit.?This little plate of amazingness consisted of raspberry and chocolate fudge ice creams, and warm caramel rum bananas.

Perfect to share, this one won?t disappoint.

Kids? Eats

It may sound silly, but one of the things that excites me most about Carthay is their Children?s Menu.

The offerings here are unlike anything I have ever seen on a Disneyland Resort Children?s Menu.?Forget chicken strips and hamburgers, Carthay is giving little ones a chance to eat sophisticated meals designed with kids in mind.

There are several dishes on here that I?d love to try too! I?m seriously considering ordered the Sloppy Joes or Chicken Schnitzel on my next visit! Oh, and those desserts? Let?s just go with, YUM!

Children's Menu

My boys are both major carnivores, so they went with the exact same meal, the Grilled Petit Filet of Beef with Broccoli and Crispy Macaroni and Cheese.? However, they switched it up and got green beans and french fries instead of the broccoli.

Grilled Petit Filet of Beef

We did, however, take that order of Mac n? Cheese on the side, and I?m thrilled we did because it was so delish. Really rich and filling, very similar to the Mac n? Cheese at Napa Rose.

Side of Mac n' Cheese with Fresh Parmesan

The desserts on the children?s menu also do not disappoint. My boys ordered the Green Apple Caramel Parfait Push Pop and the Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich. They devoured them so quick, I barely managed to get a taste in!

My favorite of the two was definitely the Green Apple Caramel Parfait Push Pop: Green Apple and Lemon Raspberry Sorbets layered with caramel. It was tart, sweet, and topped with the same chocolate ?gravel? Flo?s uses on their milkshakes!

My 10 year old son really enjoyed the presentation of the Push Pop. I literally had to pry it out of his hands to try it.

Green Apple Caramel Parfait Push Pop

This is what the Push Pop looked like after just a few minutes after my son received it. I?d say it was a hit?

Devoured Push Pop

My 8 year old ordered the Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich with Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Dipping Sauce. Basically two fresh chocolate-chocolate chip cookies with chocolate ice cream in the middle, served with a little dipping bowl full of chocolate sauce, sprinkles & whipped cream.?Heaven for my little chocolate lover.

Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich

It was really yummy, but for me, chocolate overload! There?s no way I could?ve eaten the whole thing. My 8 year old had no problem scarfing it down.

Beverages at Carthay Circle Restaurant

Carthay serves a wide variety of ?Disney? family wines, including several from John Lasseter?s winery in Napa located in Northern California.

More Lasseter Family Wines

There are also several specialty drinks as well as specialty non-alcholic drinks.?Stay tuned for a post on Carthay drinks. I need to go back just to cover beverages!

Beverage Menu

Wines sold by the glass are stored here in the center of the main dining room. There are also wines available by the bottle that are stored in several cellars throughout the restaurant.

Overall

I am thrilled that Carthay Circle Restaurant is open, and both of my meals there were absolutely fabulous.?They have an excellent variety across the board, and I think that their Children?s Menu is perhaps my new favorite in all of the Disneyland Resort.

The dishes are creative, flavorful, and unique; and it?s a super bonus that dining includes World of Color viewing (see here for details).?I can?t wait to go back again.?But first, Aulani awaits (stay tuned for reviews from Aulani soon)!

Have you been to Carthay Circle Restaurant or Lounge yet? Any favorite items?
