Simple Detox: Himalayan Bath Salts
Pink Himalayan Bath Salts are not the most easy-to-find detox medium, but this multi-purpose salt is well worth the special order. Aside from a luxurious and toxin-sucking soak, these salts make an ideal table salt substitute and can even be made into a salt-saturated internal tonic. Not to mention their deep pink hues make them one of the prettiest raw materials I?ve ever seen.
If you?re looking for a little more info on exactly how detox salt baths generally work, check out last week?s blog about Epsom salt baths. A Himalayan Salt bath is a bit different from Epsom Salts and require a few specific changes to the general regimen.
I made this special Toning Detox Bath formula with essential oils of Grapefruit, Lemongrass, Lavender and Sage. This blend increases circulation and dissolves hardened fat cells.
Why Himalayan Salt?
Himalayan salts are said to contain 84 essential minerals that not only make skin baby-soft, but also efficiently detox the entire body. A strong Himalayan Salt bath (1-2 full pounds of salt per bath) is claimed to be the equivalent of a 3-day fats in terms of detoxification. Of course this can?t be confirmed, but I?ve done several of these baths and definitely believe it. As good as this salt makes you feel, it can be very draining compared to other detox baths. I?d like to think this is due to its mega-detox powers. Salt Works is a great resource for Himalayan Salt and can be ordered in a variety of ?grinds.? I recommend a fine grind because it dissolves faster and doubles as table salt.
There are also many reported benefits of a Himalayan Salt Sole, which is essentially water saturated with salt. You?re supposed to take 1 tsp of the sole in a glass of water every morning upon rising. I love Himalayan Salt and I tried this method, but I could not get over the slightly salty blood-reminiscent taste of the sole, even diluted in a full glass of water. I?m sure some of you are more brave than I, but I?ll stick with getting my internal fix by sprinkling it on my eggs.
>>CAUTION<<
Himalayan Salt baths are intended to be taken at or just above body temperature, but can still pose a risk. If at any time you feel light headed or dizzy, add cool water to the tub or put a cold wash cloth on your head. Drink LOTS of water. Get out of the tub very slowly. If you have any medical conditions, check with your doctor before performing any kind of detox. Hot baths are not recommended for people with high blood pressure.
This salt is by far my most favorite detox medium and is definitely worth the special order, if only to look at those pretty pink crystals up close.
Simple Detox: Himalayan Bath Salts |
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Himalayan Salt (normal bath) -or- 1-2 lbs (about 2-4 cups) Himalayan Salt (STRONG bath)
- 1 Gallon of cool water with ice and lemon (lemon aids detoxification)
- Bowl of ice water and wash cloth (optional, for hot baths)
- 3-4 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil or oil of choice (optional)
Instructions
- Shower and wash thoroughly before taking a detox bath.
- Fill your tub with water that is about 98-100 degrees, just at or slightly above body temperature. This allows for maximum absorption and will also make you sweat. If you prefer hot baths, then enjoy it hot. You?ll still experience an effective detox.
- Dissolve Himalayan salts in the tub as it?s filling. If your salts are chunky, you may need to let them sit overnight in a large pot of water to fully dissolve. If using essential oils, add them to the running water as your tub fills.
- Soak in the tub for as long as feels comfortable, 40 minutes is generally recommended.
- Remember to stay hydrated! You probably wont drink the entire gallon of water, but it?s good to have around just in case.
- When you?re finished, drain the tub and get out slowly. Some weakness is to be expected.
- Some people recommend showering again after the detox bath, others say that it?s best to air dry, letting the mineral-rich water soak into your skin.
